Mandela Echefu, currently serving as the Secretary of the Climbing Coalition, brings a diverse background to the climbing community. With a rich history in the healthcare industry, Mandela has traversed various roles, from clinical care in Radiology to administrative responsibilities. In the past five years, he has also ventured into the world of outdoor adventure as the owner and operator of Wheelzup Adventures, a specialty outdoor retail business catering to enthusiasts of all things outdoors.

Mandela's journey into the world of climbing began with a sense of curiosity. Growing up in Nigeria, climbing was not a familiar pursuit. However, a connection with fellow climbers introduced him to the magical world of climbing, sparking a passion that has only grown stronger with time.

As an executive member of the Climbing Coalition, Mandela harbors ambitious goals. His primary objective is to make climbing accessible to the broader public, particularly those who may not have had previous exposure to the sport. Mandela envisions a climbing community in Western Maryland that is built on principles of accessibility, knowledge-sharing, and a strong sense of community.

Drawing on the unique position of Wheelzup Adventures as the third Black-owned specialty retail operation in the country, Mandela aims to spotlight and enhance the climbing scene in Western Maryland. He brings a wealth of experience from the outdoor retail industries, leveraging his skills to contribute to the growth and inclusivity of the climbing community.

Outside of climbing, he finds interest in skiing, biking, and photography.
